Having the Core Content broken down in kid friendly language enables students to focus their energies on understanding what they have to do to meet the standard before them. On one of my boards is the breakdown of the core content for the week, along with the vocabulary that they will be learning, under each subject area.
I also work with students in setting personal SMART goals for each I CAN statement. Having a goal for the standard allows for great discussions on the ways that they will work to show how they have completed both their goal and standard.
Goal setting discussions are extremely rewarding to both the students and myself. In these discussions I see students taking responsibilty for their learning. They discuss each I CAN learning objective, set goals, and provide evidence to demonstrate what they are working on and/or what they have learned. I also see students taking ownership of their work, reflection on their learning, identification of strengths, next steps, and plans with strategies towards improvement because they understand what they have to do and know where they need to go.
