My Reading/Writing Workshop is based on diagnosing students individual strengths and needs as readers and writers and designing instruction based on what students' need. There are many touchstone scientifically based research books that I use for support and resources like Teaching for Deep Comprehension by Linda Dorn and Carla Saffos; The Daily 5 and The CAFE Book, and Writing Circles.
In reading and writing workshop, I start out by teaching students to understand that everything starts out with a blank page and that authors are writers and writers are authors. While I work with students, I also teach them how their brain responds to situations and work with them to become much better metacognitive thinkers, readers and writers.
The daily schedule for reading/writing workshop is the following:
Introduction of Strategy
Shared Reading/Writing
Guided Reading/Writing
Independent Reading/Writing
My writing/reading workshop will be run in a similar fashion to last year, but the students will be responsible for more tasks to engage in reading.and writing In addition to writing weekly letters, students will perform inquiries that relate to the weekly topics taught as a whole class. Students will be given a lot of choice in which activities they will complete to show their learning. Various groups will meet on a regular basis to complete the workshop. Some groups consisting of all types of readers will choose a novel that they would like to read and discuss. Others will be called together to work on a targeted skill. This dynamic approach to reading gives learners multiple opportunities to learn valuable skills and then apply them.
