I will work with students to become proficient writers by using a Writer’s Workshop approach. In writing, students will practice and continue to develop their skills of the writing process: planting seeds, prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Each day, students will be exposed to a writing strategy, engage in writing time, and share their work during author’s chair. We will focus on one genre at a time. I will incorporate technology into students writing, and ask students to use technology too!
Last year students participated in a year-long project based unit that dealt with learning about careers and historical figures. Students went to the local library to conduct research. Local actors worked with students to learn how to write and present monologues using props and scenery. Students worked with technology by creating power points of their journey and presented to their families. In this way, students wrote many different kinds of genres like .
This year with full implementation of the Kentucky Common Core Standards third graders will be writing to produce the 7 pieces in the categories below:
1. Narrative
2. Informative or Explanatory
3. Opinion
4. Literary Analysis
5. Writing to Learn (this genre reflects a students use of writing to process information, develop thinking, learning new content and/or synthesize new concepts (e.g., writer's notebook entry, reflective learning log, short summary, reader's notebook entry)
6. Writing to Demonstrate Learning (open response, essay response, research, report, summary of reading)
