This year I will be using the standards from the Common Core. The math program I will be following will be Math Investigations 2. To learn more about this program click here. Third grade students will be tested on the Kentucky Common Core State Standards (KCAS).
By using Math Investigations 2 as my primary program I am able to support my students' thinking in new ways, to discuss mathematical procedures and to use mathematical language to show understanding both orally and in writing. With this program students are active in their thinking, which helps support their application toward 21st century standards.
To help with the homework that your child will be taking home, you can ask questions like:
1. What is the problem you are working on?
2. What did the teacher tell you to do? If you don't remember, let's read the directions and then read through all the problems to see if we can pick up a pattern.
3. What do you understand?
4. What don't you understand?
5. What words help you think about what you know?
6. Do you have a strategy? Drawing? Making a table? Guess and check?
7. How about it we go through the steps first just by talking and then we can write out our thinking?
The best thing that you can do to help support your child is to tell them that it is okay to struggle with problems. By keeping with it and not giving up, they are learning about trying out different ways of solving problems. Not giving up is an invaluable character trait to possess.
If your child continues to struggle, just write me a note, so I know exactly what happened and what I need to do to support both you and your child. Remember...my job is to support your child in becoming a confident and well-rounded learner.

Week 1 - Common Core Standards
we will be working towards learning to apply:
* 2.NBT.8- Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100-900, and mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900.
* 3.OA.8 Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
* 3.OA.9 Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations.
* 3.NBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
* 3.NBT.2 Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operation, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
